Wisdom Warriors – The Legacy Lives On

While my children were growing up, we read the Bible together every evening and prayed. It was such a natural part of our daily routine. It opened the door for some wonderful discussions, and we grew closer through the experience. However, during the summer months we added to the routine by reading a chapter from Proverbs each day; 31 chapters in Proverbs was the perfect number to get us through the month. We would each share the verse that stood out or even jumped off the pages. Reading through Proverbs became our summer tradition. It was their father’s idea and a good one. He loved the book of Proverbs.

One summer as they were getting older, in the double digits, we decided to give ourselves a name. (Yes, if you know us, then you know we’re into names!) We called ourselves Wisdom Warriors. Their friends even joined us that summer when we gathered to share our favorite verses. As the kids grew up and became busy with school and jobs, our Warrior gatherings became less and less. It was a fond memory.

Three years ago, I sent out a group text to my now grown children. I reminded them of our summers in Proverbs and rallied them all to continue the tradition in honor of their late father’s legacy. One of the kids texted back, “Wisdom Warriors!” In fact, one son shared that he had continued his own journey with Proverbs over the years. Wisdom Warriors was resurrected!

Each year, as June approaches, I send out the text to remind the gang. Each summer I fondly read through Proverbs three times and occasionally share a favorite verse in a group text to my grown kids. They’ll share from time to time as well. It’s our summer thing. One day in the future, I hope that there will be a new generation, their children, who will join in the sharing. Yesterday I read through Proverbs 31, a mother’s words of wisdom to her son, along with the qualities of the ideal woman. I also prayed through those verses for my own children before closing that book… till next summer. The legacy lives on.
