Creating a Cozy Backyard Haven

It was time! Our firepit area was needing a little makeover. The paint was flaking on the once shiny red chairs gathered around the fire. I needed to pull them out and stand them in line, along with the rest of my painting projects… just waiting for a fresh coat of paint. Also, I was itching to try something a little different… a new color and rearranging some of the outdoor furniture.

Here’s an old BEFORE picture with the red chairs gathered around the fire pit. Kinda cute!

I wanted to challenge myself to use what we already had, starting with two Adirondack chairs in our front yard, sitting all pretty but rarely used. I decided to bring them to the backyard and use them with a wicker bench, all gathered around the firepit. The Adirondacks were painted a bright Rustoleum Spa Blue, so I chose to paint the bench to match. Of course, all of these ideas were dancing around in my head for a couple months before I took action.

Here’s a little peek at the AFTER look. What a difference! Isn’t Spa Blue a wonderful color?!!! So cozy & inviting!

I was a little nervous about painting the resin wicker bench. I didn’t want the paint to constantly be chipping. I cleaned it up before applying Rust-Oleum Spa Blue spray paint. I had to shop around to find the same color that I used a couple years ago on the Adirondack chairs. Finally, I found a couple cans. I was thrilled with how it looked when done.

The plaid throw was a gift. I knew blue check would be perfect in this little haven. Doesn’t this have a cozy cottage feel?!

My motto when decorating is: First choose a theme. Then select a color scheme. I had envisioned a late summer sunflower theme with blues and yellow. I added all kinds of accessories fitting those colors and theme, including pillows, vases with flowers, tablecloth, and throws. I mixed in a few vintage touches as well for a bit of character and charm.

Little details made all the difference.

You’ll notice I also included a little table, perfect for coffee or tea cups, as well as snacks. I placed it a little off to the side, away from the fire pit. I intended for this whole area to be be a morning haven, afternoon respite under the shade of trees, as well as an evening gathering spot for family and friends. In the Spring, we hung string lights to create a wonderful oasis under the stars. With the firepit, this area can be used through several seasons. We have plenty of throws ready for chilly nights of snuggling!

I recently found the old metal folding chair at ReStore for $1. Yellow spray paint gave it new life. Can you just imagine a cozy group of family or friends gathering here?!

There’s just something enchanting about being outside under the stars with twinkling lights! You can’t help but to draw closer and look up. This area definitely feels like home.

A comfy cozy spot for two by the fire!

Since completing the project, I’ve found myself gravitating to this area more and more. It’s just so comfortable! I’m working on redecorating the inside of the greenhouse now, so it will match. I can’t wait to share it as well! I hope you’ve found inspiration and ideas from my cozy backyard makeover. It’s proof that you don’t even need a deck or patio to create a happy outdoor haven!

There’s something special about this little haven! It beckons you to sit for a while and enjoy.
