A PLAID CHRISTMAS! Fun and Festive Ways to Decorate With Plaid at Christmas time

Are you mad for plaid?! Does plaid make you glad?! Yes and Yes for me! At Christmas time our living and dining rooms don plaid magnificently. Decorating with tartan plaid is all the fad!

I hope you’ll be inspired by the inexpensive ways we’ve incorporated plaid into our Christmas decorating to create a cozy country cottage Christmas.

Do you see what I see?!! PLAID!

PLAID SHELVES

This is where our plaid craze began, in the dining room. Our vintage corner cabinet gets a facelift for Christmas. Santa definitely approves of this plaid Christmas makeover!

Our vintage corner cabinet from the ReStore had orange paint on the back of each shelf. Plaid wrapping paper from Dollar Tree transforms this cabinet for just $1!
I simply measure each shelf and cut the wrapping paper accordingly. Clear tape is used to attach it.
Doesn’t plaid look perfect as the backdrop for this Santa display?!
The Santa collection grows a little bit bigger each year. I look forward to unpacking the Santa’s, as well as the 3 saved pieces of plaid wrapping paper to back the shelves. TIP: Rolling the plaid wrap around an old wrapping paper tube preserves it.

PLAID TABLE RUNNER

Certain Christmas decorations are a family tradition. In the Lane home, we adorn our table at Christmas time with a homemade patchwork memory table runner. It is made from repurposed clothing once worn by family members. Making this runner, with help from my daughters, is a favorite memory for me. It costs nothing to make… only precious time spent together.

Gathering around the table with a runner full of memories! The tartain plaid squares are from a repurposed shirt. The plaid pattern ties all of the colors together.
Isn’t this a sweet and sentimental way to adorn the table?! Most of the squares are from old shirts once worn by my late first husband. I especially remember him packing the plaid shirt for a discipleship trip to Washington DC.
Laying out the squares on the table, before sewing, helps to determine the perfect pattern. Do you see how we placed the plaid in each row? It’s a fun challenge to space the various patterns so matching ones are never next door neighbors. Only corners can touch. Kids enjoy helping with this.
This is the back side of our festive plaid repurposed Christmas table runner… nothing fancy, no backing necessary.

PLAID RIBBON

My husband and I enjoy scouring estate sales for bargains and treasures. I hit the jackpot with lots of brand new Christmas tartain plaid ribbon for next to nothing. Using the ribbon with various Christmas displays throughout the house, ties everything together in that cozy cottage style that I so adore at Christmas time.

In our living room, we decorate our smaller tree with vintage glass ornaments, which happen to be the same colors found in tartain plaid. This bargain estate sale ribbon matches perfectly.
Have yourself a Merry Plaid Christmas! Decorating with plaid is so much fun!
The mantel beside our Christmas tree continues the theme of decorating for Christmas with plaid.  I really like it when everything flows.
Notice the plaid ribbon bow placed as a tree topper. Lots and lots of plaid at Christmas time!
In our dining room, plaid ribbon adorns this special Christmas chalkboard displayed with our  collection of nativity scenes. The cornhusk angels are hung from the ceiling with the same tartain plaid ribbon.

FRAMED PLAID

I collect old frames to use in decorating. Most of ours are from ReStore, inexpensive finds. They look wonderful displayed on our bookcase mantel. At Christmas, I dress them up with plaid wrapping paper. It’s such an easy way to add color and pattern to a Christmas vignette.

What a difference the plaid makes, adding needed color.
Both plaid fabric and plaid wrapping paper work wonderfully displayed in a frame.
I use the same plaid wrapping paper leftover from lining our dining room corner cabinet.
Most frames have cardboard in them already. If not, it’s so simple to measure the opening and cut a rectangle from an old cereal box or shipping box. Tape helps to hold the plaid paper in place.

PLAID LINENS

Estate sales sell Christmas items no matter the season. I always look for bargain linens…. tablecloths, napkins, doilies, etc. Plaid tablecloths are a favorite find. Red and green plaid is not just for Christmas; it works well with a strawberry or watermelon theme in the summer as well. Linens can be used in many creative ways!

A tartain plaid table just for two! So festive and cozy!
This little farmhouse table is in our sunroom, where we entertain and celebrate Christmas…a plaid Christmas.
The afternoon light in this room is magnificent. It highlights the plaid perfectly.
These are not necessarily Christmas dishes. I just use anything with Christmas colors to match the plaid tablecloth.
This view is through our kitchen window over the sink. Our sunroom is an added build, so my view while doing dishes is this beautiful Christmas plaid setting.
Using plaid linens in creative ways helps take vignettes to a whole new level. This is a sunroom view, where I display my luggage collection stacked with plaid and lace linens.

PLAID THROW BLANKETS

In the winter, couch and comfy chair sittin’ must include a warm snuggly blanket…. and we have all kinds. Everyone has their favorite, including the dogs. My husband is all about the function, warm and soft. For me, I’m more into frou frou, preferring something pretty and plaid.

A PLAID patchwork quilt adds the perfect touch to this cozy Christmas corner.
Red, white and blue aren’t just for summer! They’re a wonderful winter combination, especially at Christmas time. This thrifted plaid throw blanket helps to evoke winter wonderland vibes, and it’s sooo warm.
My husband’s “comfy chair” is his favorite spot to relax with the dogs on his lap. Adding a bit of plaid to the back of his chair helps to tie it in with the rest of the room.
A PLAID throw adds a bit of cozy to this corner.

PLAID DECORATIONS & MORE

When decorating, it’s all the little things that tie it together. I’m amazed at how many plaid items and decorations that we already own. It’s like a scavenger hunt, finding all of the fun plaid things to use for Christmas decor. Plus, shopping your own home is easy on the budget.

My younger daughter took an interest in sewing while in high school. One of her sewing projects was Christmas pillows, which I proudly display at Christmas time. Notice the plaid in the pillow on the right.
Dollar Tree never fails! Stockings with plaid trim are darling hung from the mantel.
An easy PLAID DIY! Using leftover fabrics, I made a simple snowman dressed in plaid for Christmas. No sewing is needed…. hot glue.
Typically , I use the previous year’s decor as a template, and then move all the little things around to give each year a new look. My younger daughter’s homemade pillow shines in the sunroom.
My older daughter gifted me with adorable plaid Christmas pillows. In the rocker, the snow cuties are dressed in plaid. I like how the pillow colors match the plaid throw on the arm of the rocker.
In our split-level foyer, family and friends are greeted with a festive snow display, including the red plaid scarf.
My childhood sled is fading, but not from hanging on walls. My four kids enjoyed years of sledding with this vintage Comet treasure. On this particular Christmas, a plaid winter scarf makes a colorful bow for our foyer.
Plaid scarves are simply adorable on Christmas owls! These owls are past gifts from my children. With a little extra plaid fabric, all kinds of decor can be transformed.
A Christmas tree of vintage stacked suitcases looks even better with the top plaid suitcase. Do you like our star tree topper?!
Potholders are an easy way to add a little plaid to the kitchen at Christmas time.
Plaid thermoses are all the fad. #thermosnation is a craze. Target replicated the real deal with miniature thermos ornaments.

PLAID WRAPPED GIFTS

If you’re like me, then matchy matchy is just your style. It’s fun to match the decor theme with the wrapping paper. I used to be obsessed with snowmen, lots of snowmen displays AND snowmen wrapping paper to match. I definitely like it when all the wrapped gifts look like a continuation of the Christmas decor. Now that my kids are grown, they buy their own paper with more variety of gift wrap.

I stock up on lots of plaid paper to ensure a plaid Christmas under the tree.
I’m definitely glad about plaid at Christmas time!

CLAD IN PLAID

Am I taking this plaid theme too far when family arrives for Christmas dressed in plaid?!!! In all honesty, this wasn’t planned, but I find it delightful. My family is not the type to get excited about matching plaid jammies, much less Christmas shirts. So you can just imagine my inner joy in seeing those plaid shirts. If your family adores such fun Christmas merriment, I think it would look AMAZING with everyone clad in plaid.

The dogs didn’t get the memo to wear their winter plaid sweaters!

A PLAID Christmas theme is such a fun way to add a comfy cozy feel to a cold winter holiday. Plus, it’s a timeless theme that has the potential to become a favorite family tradition. From plaid Christmas ribbon to matching plaid jammies, I hope you are inspired to add a little plaid to your home at Christmas time. Go PLAID! You’ll be glad!

The countdown is on! Now you know how long ago I started writing this plaid Christmas post! (I am such a slow writer.) As I finally finish writing, there are 360 days till Christmas. Lots of time to score darling PLAID decor!
